L.E.T.S. Draw

The L.E.T.S. Draw Project (Links Educating Talented Students to Draw) is a partnership of The Links, Incorporated, Greater Miami Chapter and the Overtown Youth Center (OYC), and is the first in a series of art programs that identify and nurture the artistic ability of youth in the historic Overtown community of Miami.

The artwork on display, entitled It’s Our World, expresses the students’ feelings and observations of the world around them and was developed as a group project.

L.E.T.S. Draw is designed to educate minority youth who have artistic ability and interest in the visual arts.  The primary goal of the project is to increase knowledge of drawing; build self-confidence in drawing skills; encourage continued study; and provide career exposure in the field of visual arts.   During the 14-month program, students developed a basic understanding of fine art, learned to analyze and critique works of art and created original pieces for public display.  This inaugural initiative, which included weekly programs with a focus on drawing, was taught by OYC resident art instructor, Rodney Royal.  Special sessions were also developed and provided by professional visual artist, Louis Valle through Arts for Learning Miami.  These special sessions were designed to promote using arts-based instruction, positive youth development and life skills building (i.e. communication and interpersonal skills), decision- making and critical thinking skills.
