Two MIA Employees Receive Federal, Local Recognition

Text

Miami-Dade County, FL – Miami International Airport (MIA) Ramp Control Supervisor Jim Murphy received the 2008 Southern Region Safety Partnership Award from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in January at the FAA Southern Region’s Communications Conference in Atlanta.

He was nominated by the FAA’s Miami Air Traffic Control Tower for his last 13 years of service in airside operations at MIA.  His accomplishments include: active participation in every incident and investigation on the MIA airfield; immediate action on safety recommendations from tower personnel and tenants; and training and airfield familiarization for air traffic and airport personnel, including new employee orientation.

Murphy has been with the Miami-Dade Aviation Department (MDAD) for 27 years, moving up the ranks in the Airside Operations Division to his current position of ramp control supervisor.  He is primarily responsible for ensuring that MIA meets FAA requirements to be certified under Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) 139, which allows U.S. commercial airports to operate.  During Murphy’s tenure, MIA has achieved a zero discrepancy rating on the airport’s annual FAR 139 inspection – the highest rating possible – for the last 11 years. Murphy lives in Hallandale.

Locally, the Board of Directors of the South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in February presented MDAD Media Relations Manager Marc T. Henderson with its “Outstanding Leadership Award” during its annual Black History Month celebration.

Henderson is active in the Miami-Dade County community as: past president of the Greater Miami Aviation Association; parliamentarian/historian for 100 Black Men of South Florida; a board of trustees member for Florida Memorial University; a board of directors member for the Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce and the American Cancer Society, Miami-Dade unit; a pillar trustee board member for the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce; and a member of the South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

As part of his involvement with 100 Black Men of South Florida and the American Cancer Society, he is also the host of the Saturday afternoon radio program, Healthy Choices, Healthy People, broadcast on WMCU 1080 AM.  Henderson lives in Miami Shores.
