WASHINGTON – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) named Miami International Airport (MIA) as the agency's Airport of the Year during the 7th annual national honorary awards ceremony today. The award recognizes the airport that continuously implements the highest quality of airport security while maintaining exceptional courtesy and attentiveness to all passengers and customers. "This award was earned by the determination and hard work of our TSA men and women and it validates the quality of the enduring partnerships that we have forged within our airport community," said Miami Federal Security Director Mark Hatfield. "I am extremely proud of our team and our partners in Miami." Nearly 34 million passengers every year pass through MIA, which is ranked third in international passengers among airports in the United States. MIA recently added security amenities to include an in-line baggage system and new checkpoints in the South Terminal and at Concourses C-D. TSA has converted to the latest in technology with the installation of Advanced Technology X-ray and Whole Body Imaging systems. One key metric for airport recognition is average wait times at security checkpoints and those at MIA have significantly decreased. MIA now ranks third among the 24 largest Category X airports in the United States. With the implementation of optimized checkpoint operations, on average, more than 90 percent of MIA’s passengers wait less than 10 minutes to be processed by the TSA. “I’m deeply honored to accept this award on behalf of the officers, inspectors and TSA staff at Miami International Airport who work with profound dedication night and day to secure this facility and the millions who use it,” Hatfield said at the Washington ceremony.
