On Thursday, January 13, 2000, at 6:00 PM, mia Gallery, on the second level of Concourse E, past the security checkpoint at Miami International Airport, will inaugurate the exhibition of Salvatore J. La Rosa: The Past Twenty Years.
Salvatore J. La Rosa is a well-known and respected local artist. He has exhibited extensively in the four decades he has been painting and has received numerous awards.
He has also been a full-time faculty member at Miami-Dade Community College since 1967, teaching Drawing, Art Appreciation and Humanities.
Mr. La Rosa’s early work, up until 1982-83, was primarily figurative, but since then his work has gradually become more and more abstract and smaller in scale. The most recent work reflects the artist’s interest in collage and mixed media. He collects and saves tiny fragments of wood, metal, plastic and paper, which he often picks up off the street, and incorporates these into the paintings and drawings. He even collages fragments of paintings into other paintings. All of the work is process-oriented and highly autobiographical.
mia Gallery is a 2,400 sq. ft., totally enclosed, secure space expanding the range and quality of exhibits offered to the public. The Gallery is a component of the broader Exhibition Program created for the purpose of humanizing the airport environment by providing cultural and educational experiences for passengers and the meeters and greeters that accompany them.
Exhibits at mia Gallery will continually change every three to four months.
