On Thursday, September 30, 1999, at 6 p.m., Miami International Airport will celebrate the opening of the second mia Gallery art exhibition entitled The Present Absent.
After a successful opening in Rio at one of South America’s most important centers of contemporary exhibition, The Present Absent features the work of William Cordova, Tom Downs, John Espinosa, Luis Gispert, Jorge Pantoja, Karen Rifas, Ruben Torres-Llorca and Eugenia Vargas, eight Artists from Miami.
The Present Absent is an international exchange exhibition that began in 1998 at Miami-Dade Community College Centre Gallery. The 1998 exchange, The Present Absent: Five Artist from Rio, Kate Rawlinson, curator, exhibited the work of Efrain Almeida, Eduardo Coimbra, Fernanda Gomez; rosana Palazyan and Mauricio Ruiz. In 1999, the second part – The Present Absent: Eight Artists from Miami – opened in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on July 8, ran through August 15, 1999 and now continues in Miami.
Through their work, these artists challenge the concepts of tradition and culture as they address the relativity of meaning, the malleability of memory and the ephemeral nature of the objects and events that shape our lives.
