New Airport Screening Checkpoint Opens

MIAMI, FL -- The Miami-Dade Aviation Department (MDAD) has opened a new state-of-the-art vehicle/employee security checkpoint on the southeast side of Miami International Airport.

This security checkpoint replaces an older one located about 100 yards north. The new Southeast Gate facility is larger and more secure than the old facility.  It was completely redesigned following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, with input from MDAD staff and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

The facility includes wider booths and additional lanes for MDAD staff to inspect vehicles and airport employees. There is also a redesigned approach road and intersection and a new parking area nearby that serves the checkpoint staff.

The previous Southeast Gate complex will be demolished and paved to make way for new aircraft taxi lanes that are part of the South Terminal Program.

The cost of the new gate is $2,049,137. The designer is Edwards Kelsey.  The contractor is Parsons Odebrecht and the trade contractor is Kiewit Southern.
