MIA Has Best Year in Passenger and Cargo Traffic Since Pre-9/11

(Miami-Dade County, FL) – Miami International Airport (MIA) recorded its best year in 2006 for passenger and cargo traffic since pre-9/11, serving 32,533,974 passengers and 2,018,291 tons of cargo. Passenger numbers increased by 4.9 percent and cargo increased by 4.3 percent.

The largest contributors to the passenger growth were American Airlines and American Eagle, which set a yearly traffic record at MIA by together carrying almost 20 million passengers – nearly two-thirds of MIA’s total and 6.5 percent more than the airline carried in 2005.

MIA’s growth in domestic traffic continues to outpace international, growing 6.2 percent to 17,805,964 passengers in 2006, compared to international traffic increasing by 3.4 percent to 14,728,010.

After a worldwide downturn in air cargo traffic in 2005, MIA rebounded with six percent growth in international cargo to 1,696,037 tons.  Domestic cargo decreased by 3.6 percent to 322,254 tons. MIA’s total cargo movement of more than two million tons in 2006 is a mark achieved by only a handful of airports in the world.
