Annual Passenger Traffic at MIA Continues to Rebound

(Miami-Dade County, FL) – Miami International Airport (MIA) experienced a 2.8 percent increase in total passenger traffic during 2005, according to statistics released by the Miami-Dade Aviation Department.

Combined passenger counts rose to 31,008,453 from the total of 30,165,197 in 2004. Domestic passenger counts jumped 3.6 percent to 16,767,395, while 14,241,058 passengers boosted international traffic by 1.8 percent.

“Miami-Dade County will continue planning to ensure that MIA’s capacity keeps up with the growth of South Florida’s visitor industry,” said Miami-Dade County Manager George M. Burgess. “And with new and contemporary facilities opening at MIA in 2006, our passengers will see a definite focus towards improving comfort and services for our travelers.”

William D. Talbert, President and CEO of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, added, “The visitor industry in Miami-Dade County experienced a 6.5 percent growth in hotel occupancy last year, more than double the national increase of 2.9 percent. Visitors are returning to the area to vacation, attend conferences, conduct business and see friends and family, and many are using MIA as their arrival point.”

“We are pleased that MIA is regaining some of the passengers lost in the last several years,” said Aviation Director José Abreu, P.E. “Airlines and passengers alike have enjoyed the efficiency and convenience of no runway delays at MIA.”

Combined freight tonnage dipped slightly last year to 1,894,241 tons, a decrease of 0.94 percent from 2004’s figure of 1,912,217.  Domestic tonnage declined 0.13 percent for a total of 311,869, while international tonnage decreased 1.10 percent to a total of 1,582,371.

Cargo traffic at MIA was affected by currency fluctuations in Latin America, the rising cost of fuel, and a general worldwide decrease in cargo compared to 2004.
Aircraft operations were down 4.8 percent for a total of 381,610 in 2005, as airlines succeed in carrying more passengers with fewer flights.
