She Changes Art Exhibit on Display at MIA Gallery

(Miami-Dade County, Florida) – An art exhibition that chronicles the development of a newly completed, $1.6 million sculpture that changes shape in the wind is on display at Miami International Airport’s mia Gallery through January 31, 2006.

The sculpture, titled She Changes by artist Janet Echelman, is a 160-foot-high, 300-foot-long creation suspended over a three-lane highway roundabout on the Atlantic coastline in Porto, Portugal. It is being credited as the first permanent monumental sculpture to incorporate fluid movement.  It also creates delicate “shadow drawings” on the ground as it changes shape in the wind.

The exhibition includes two sculptures, time-lapse video projections, freehand and architectural drawings, watercolors, sketchbooks, and a limited-edition portfolio of drawings engraved on glass. It was recently featured in the Florence Lynch Gallery in New York City.

Echelmen is an award-winning artist and Florida native who has completed major sculpture commissions and installations in cities throughout Europe, Asia and North America.

mia Gallery is a 2,400-square-foot, enclosed, secure space on the second level of Concourse E, past the security checkpoint and near the departure gates. The Gallery is a component of the broader MIA Exhibition Program, created for the purpose of humanizing the airport environment with cultural and educational experiences.

Exhibits at mia Gallery change every three to four months. Slides of the work on display are available upon request.  mia Gallery is open to ticketed passengers only or by special appointment.
