New Aviation Deputy Director, GA Airports Manager Appointed

(Miami-Dade County, FL) – Miami-Dade Aviation Department (MDAD) Director José Abreu, P.E., recently appointed Bruce Drum as Deputy Director of Operations and Ronald Smith to oversee the General Aviation (GA) airports.

Drum, formerly the Assistant Director of Operations, now reports directly to the Aviation Director and is responsible for the following MDAD divisions: Airside, Landside and Terminal Operations; Security and Safety; General Aviation Airports; Facilities Maintenance; Facilities Contracts; Noise Abatement; Police; and Fire-Rescue.

Drum joined the Aviation Department in 1976 as an airport clerk and has since worked in all phases of Operations at Miami International Airport (MIA). He served as an airport operations agent and then as an airside senior agent, where he acted as MIA’s first aircraft gate assigner.  He has also held the positions of airside supervisor and chief of airside operations and GA airports.

Smith currently manages the Airside Operations Division at MIA, ensuring the safe operation of the airfield in compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations. He also manages collection and revenue accounts for more than 87 passenger and cargo air carriers.  As Manager of MDAD’s GA airports, Smith will now be responsible for Homestead General Airport, Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport, Opa-locka Airport, Opa-locka West Airport and Training and Transition Airport in Collier County.

Smith began his 29-year career at MIA in 1976, when he joined as an airport clerk. He was successively promoted to airfield attendant, airfield agent, airfield senior agent and supervisor before becoming division manager.

“Bruce and Ron are two perfect examples of the highly experienced staff we have at MDAD,” said Abreu.  “They are experts in the field of airside operations and two of the main reasons why we have one of the most efficient airport systems in the nation.”
