Miami International Airport Closes Runway for Repair

(Miami-Dade County, FL) - Miami International Airport (MIA) has begun re-surfacing its longest runway and will re-surface the intersection of another during the month of October.

Runway 9-27, the longest at 13,000 feet, closed on October 1, and will remain closed for 30 days. The Airport will also re-surface the intersection of Runways 9-27 and 12-30 (9,355 feet) during the last week of October, during which a portion of Runway 12-30 will also be closed for one week. During this re-surfacing, Runways 8R-26L (10,500 feet) and 8L-26R (8,600 feet) will remain open for aircraft traffic.

Seventy-five percent of the runway project will be completed in October and then there will be nightly closures of Runway 9-27 until the project is completed in April 2006.

In addition to the re-surfacing, the Miami-Dade Aviation Department will perform maintenance operations by adjusting the existing runway lighting, upgrading runway guard lighting, relocating runway hold bars, and restoring existing pavement markings and pavement grooving.

“This re-surfacing project will ensure that Miami International Airport maintains safe and efficient runways for airlines and their passengers,” said Deputy Director for Operations Bruce Drum.
