(Miami-Dade County, FL) – The Miami-Dade Aviation Department and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) offer the following tips for traveling through Miami International Airport (MIA) this Thanksgiving Day travel weekend:
·Arrive at the airport at least two hours before a domestic flight and at least three hours before an international flight. Have your boarding pass and valid government photo ID ready to enter the security checkpoint.
·To avoid congestion in the MIA parking garages, use the airport’s new Economy Park-and-Ride Parking Lot at N.W. 45th Avenue between N.W. 13th And 15th Street, accessible from LeJeune or Perimeter Road and less than a mile away from the Terminal (for a map, visit the Parking and Transportation page on our website). The lot contains 600 spaces at a discounted flat rate of $8 per day, and shuttle bus service to the Terminal is provided every 10 minutes. Parking at the Flamingo or Dolphin long-term garages cost a daily maximum rate of $15.
·Travelers departing from MIA may also want to be dropped off at the airport by car, taxi, shuttle bus or public transportation.
·Meeters and greeters picking up travelers can wait for their party and avoid traffic tie-ups around the airport by using MIA's free cell phone parking lot, located on the west side of LeJeune Road at N.W. 31st Street, just north of the Airport entrance (for a map, visit the Parking and Transportation page on our website).
·If you must carry liquids, gels and aerosols through the security checkpoint, remember “3-1-1”:
1.All liquids, gels and aerosols must be placed in a 3-ounce or smaller container. 2.These containers must be placed in a 1-quart, clear, plastic, zip-top bag. 3.Only 1 bag per passenger is allowed and must be removed from your carry-on luggage and placed in a bin to be screened separately at the checkpoint.
·Pactiv Corporation, maker of Hefty® brand products, and other vendors have provided MIA with a limited supply of one-quart bags this holiday season. If you need a bag, ask a TSA screener.
·Do not wrap gifts. If a TSA security officer needs to inspect a package, they may have to unwrap your gift. Please wrap gifts after arriving at your destination.
·Pack smart. Bringing prohibited items to the airport will delay the screening process for you and other passengers. If you’re not sure which items are allowed, check TSA’s web site at www.tsa.gov for a complete list.
·Dress the part. Metal in your clothing may set off the walk-through metal detector. Pack coins, keys, jewelry, belt buckles and other metal items in your carry-on bag. Remember that all shoes must be removed and screened by TSA. Passengers also need to remove blazers, suit coats and bulky sweaters in addition to outer garments.
·Film. Undeveloped film should go in your carry-on bag. Hand film that is faster than 800-speed to a security officer for physical inspection to avoid being X-rayed.
·Think. Belligerent behavior, inappropriate jokes and threats will not be tolerated. Such incidents will result in delays and possibly missing your flight. Local law enforcement may be called as necessary.
