(Miami-Dade County, FL) – Passenger and cargo numbers continued to rise at Miami International Airport (MIA) during the second quarter of calendar year 2005, according to statistics released by the Miami-Dade Aviation Department (MDAD). Particularly impressive was domestic passenger traffic in June, which was up 7.5 percent over last year.
Total passenger figures rose 2.5 percent, from 7,596,592 in the second quarter of 2004, to 7,792,885 for the same period in 2005. Of that total, 3,467,293 passengers were international and 4,325,592 were domestic.
Cargo increased by two percent, from 480,887 tons in 2004, to 490,537 in 2005 for the second quarter. International cargo totaled 404,843 tons and domestic accounted for 85,695 tons.
“As MIA maintains its position as the undisputed ‘Gateway of the Americas’, we are also seeing our domestic passenger traffic make great strides,” said Aviation Director José Abreu, P.E. “As our airlines continue to add more flights with lower fares, we anticipate continued strong growth into the near future.”
