(Miami-Dade County, FL) – Miami International Airport’s (MIA) Facilities Initiation Team (FIT) was honored recently by the National Association of Counties (NACo) with an Achievement Award in the Planning category for innovative services provided by a local government.
The FIT is responsible for oversight of MIA’s massive $5.2 billion Capital Improvement Program (CIP), a multi-year expansion and renovation project that will add 3.5 million square feet to the Airport’s Terminal building. Included in the CIP is the South Terminal development, which is on schedule to open in Spring 2006 and will add almost one million square feet of additional terminal space.
CIP project managers work alongside the FIT to coordinate demolitions, shutdown utilities, resolve conflicts between adjacent projects, and ensure systems integration. It also coordinates and balances the interests of airlines and MIA’s Operations, Maintenance, Information Systems, Facilities, and Development divisions, the Miami-Dade Aviation Department’s master consultant, and other Miami-Dade County departments.
“The Achievement Award is a great accomplishment for the FIT members who have worked so hard to make a difference in our CIP,” said Max Fajardo, Assistant Aviation Director of Facilities Management. “MIA has benefited greatly so far and will do so for years to come, as we continue to reduce costs and transition smoothly from construction to operations.”
Since the program's inception in 1970, the Achievement Award Program has honored hundreds of county government initiatives that have improved service delivery, achieved greater cost of efficiency, provided finer customer service, and helped to develop and train the workforce. Awards are made in more than 20 categories ranging from Arts and Historic Preservation to Volunteerism. This year's winners represent 25 states and 93 counties.
