(Miami-Dade County, FL) – Two new gates that are part of Miami International Airport’s (MIA) North Terminal Development (NTD) project opened recently. Gates D39 and D40, located in Concourse D, serve both international and domestic flights and can handle wide-body aircraft. They also feature the latest dynamic information displays that are part of the Airport Operations Information System (AOIS).
This section of the concourse is known as the “D connector,” since it connects the previously existing section of Concourse D with the newly added extension. The opening of the new gates completes the addition of 30,000 square feet to the existing facility.
Slated to open in 2009, the NTD project encompasses 3.2 million square feet and 48 international gates. The one-mile-long area will feature new retail and food concessions, a new VIP lounge, and other passenger amenities, including a rooftop Automated People Mover to facilitate passenger connections.
“Our $5.2 billion Capital Improvement Program is well on its way,” said Interim Aviation Director Carlos F. Bonzon, Ph.D., P.E. “The Concourse D extension gives us a first look at not only the modern design of our new facility, but its functional efficiency.”
