(Miami-Dade County, FL) – “Why drive north for an affordable fare?” That’s the question Miami International Airport (MIA) is posing to local residents in its new marketing campaign, which began May 1.
The answer: “You don’t have to anymore, because low fares have landed at Miami International Airport.”
“We’re trying to get the word out to people in South Florida that the low fares you may think you have to drive north to get from a so-called ‘low cost carrier’ may be available at MIA,” explains Interim Aviation Department Director Carlos F. Bonzon, Ph.D., P.E. “When you add the cost of gasoline – especially at $2.30 a gallon -- tolls, and time, you may find that you aren’t really saving any money.”
The campaign will inform travelers of the many reasons why they should say, “I Fly MIA!”, the theme of the ads. To remain competitive, many airlines at MIA now offer specialty fares and simplified fare plans, which do away with certain restrictions that would normally increase the price of a ticket. Other incentives are MIA’s central location in the middle of Miami-Dade County, and the Airport’s $4.8 billion Capital Improvement Program designed to make the Airport more user-friendly. One improvement already available is the new, $22 million Central Collection Plaza, which serves the Airport’s two long-term parking garages. The facility has six entry lanes and 16 exit lanes, and allows patrons to self-pay with credit cards at unmanned booths, easing the flow of traffic.
“We want South Floridians to know that they might be able to find affordable fares, spend less time on the road getting to the airport, and experience less stress by starting their trip closer to home, at MIA,” adds Dr. Bonzon. “When you take all this into consideration, there is no reason why our neighbors and friends should not be saying, ‘I Fly MIA!’”
