(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Miami-Dade Aviation Department Director José Abreu (pictured) and other officials from Miami International Airport and the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) welcomed Iberia's first transatlantic service from Barcelona with service to MIA beginning on Tuesday, March 29.

The carrier now provides nonstop flights to MIA on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays using a 254-seat Airbus A-340/300 aircraft with a reconfigured 36-seat Business Plus section. The airline expects to transport 53,000 passengers on this route in the first year of operation. In addition to the new Barcelona service, Iberia offers daily nonstop flights between Madrid and MIA. The inaugural flight was welcomed with a water cannon salute by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
