MIAMI-DADE MAYOR, AVIATION DIRECTOR REACT TO AMERICAN AIRLINES-U.S. AIRWAYS MERGER SETTLEMENT

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez and Miami-Dade Aviation Director Emilio T. González reacted to the news of a settlement between the U.S. Department of Justice and American Airlines/U.S. Airways with the following statements.

Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez:
“I’m pleased that the Justice Department was able to reach an equitable outcome with American Airlines and U.S. Airways. American Airlines is one of our community’s largest private employers and this settlement brings much-needed peace of mind to some 9,000 local employees with the potential to generate many new jobs following the merger.”

Aviation Director Emilio T. González:
“We appreciate Attorney General Holder and the U.S. Department of Justice for heeding the call from numerous U.S. airports to let the American Airlines-U.S. Airways merger proceed. This is a fair decision that allows MIA’s hub carrier to move forward with clear direction and the ability to offer even more travel options to our valued customers. MIA was one of the first airports to speak out against the Justice Department’s lawsuit, so the outcome is especially rewarding for us.”
