Miami International Airport launched an airport-wide military appreciation campaign at the global gateway today as a simple gesture of gratitude to America’s men and women in uniform, and as a reminder to passengers and airport visitors of the sacrifices that members of the armed forces continue to make at home and abroad.
Created by the Miami-Dade Aviation Department’s Fine Arts & Cultural Affairs Division, the visual campaign features the image of a young active-duty U.S. Army soldier shaking the hand of an elderly World War II veteran in a passenger waiting area, accompanied by the simple message, “MIA thanks our service members and their families for their sacrifices.” The heartwarming image is displayed on ticket-counter monitors throughout the airport’s pre-security passenger check-in areas, and will soon be featured on monitors at post-security departure gates.
“This is our simple way of showing gratitude to America’s active-duty military and veterans each and every day,” said Miami-Dade Aviation Director Emilio T. González. “When the news headlines fade away, it’s all too easy to forget that thousands of our fellow Americans are living in harm’s way at this very moment, and that hundreds of thousands more have done so before them. MIA proudly salutes these brave men and women for their service.”
In addition to the military appreciation campaign, MIA is home to a 3,500-square-foot Military Hospitality Lounge, which has served an average of 1,200 guests per month since opening in 2008. The recently renovated space features a main lounge, two private rest areas and a children's play area. Complimentary refreshments and computer, internet and telephone service are also offered for veterans and active duty military members and their families with valid military I.D. The Military Hospitality Lounge is located on the second level of Central Terminal to the right of the Concourse E security checkpoint.
