A group of music fans in Amsterdam contacted KLM airlines via Twitter asking for a flight to Miami, and the airline agreed to accommodate them. Live music played on the KLM Royal Dutch Airline flight during the nine-hour trip from Amsterdam to Miami. D.J.'s spinning, passengers dancing and drinks flowing; but what they should have been doing was thanking Twitter, because if it weren't for the social media site, that serves 140 million tweets per day, the flight never would have happened. According to KLM, it is the world's first airline to add a flight to its schedule following a Twitter challenge.
It's been six years since the company had a non-stop flight to Miami, and it wasn't supposed to start up again until next week. But when the music fans tweeted they wanted to get to the Magic City for the Ultra Music Festival, the airline agreed to speed up the process. "We asked 'How many people do we need to get an earlier flight?' It took KLM some time, but they replied 'if you fill the plane we fly,'" said D.J. Sied Van Riel. Five hours later, the tweeters managed to generate 351 reservations, and the airline scheduled two flights to Miami. "We just pulled it off. How ridiculous is that? Thanks to a thing called 'Twitter,'" Van Riel said.Continue

American Boards More Than 39,000 Passengers in a Single Day American Airlines today announced it has hit a record-breaking milestone for its operations at Miami International Airport (MIA). Miami International Airport set a new all-time record for annual passenger traffic with 35.6 million passengers in 2010, shattering the previous record of 34.5 million set in 1997. MIA’s total passenger count grew 5.35 percent, with international passengers increasing 5.77 percent to 16.89 million and domestic traffic jumping 4.97 percent to 18.8 million. MIA continues to benefit from American Airlines’ commitment to expand service at its Latin American and Caribbean hub. Together with American Eagle, its regional affiliate, American Airlines added more than 30 new daily flights in 2010 and now operates 310 flights per day at MIA – approximately 70 percent of the airport’s total traffic. In addition, eight other carriers began new international routes at MIA last year.
Cargo volume at MIA rose year over year in 2010 to 1.99 million tons from 2009's 1.7 million tons, up 18.8% rise. After losses in 2008 and 2009, 2010's 1.99 million tons marked a recovery of all previous losses and fell just short of 2007's cargo record of 2 million tons. About MIA

In January, internationally renowned travel website Fodor’s ranked MIA among the top 10 airports in the world for passengers to spend a layover. According to Fodor’s: “As a gateway for routes south, it’s no surprise that Miami is stocked with amazing Latino site-specific art projects like the massive and colorful Carybé murals, while the mobile Andan Volando by Emilio Adan Martinez dangles from the ceiling of the North Terminal. But the Latino food refuses to be upstaged: guava pastelitos from Café La Carreta and café cortaditos and ham and cheese empanadas from Café Versailles are as good as anything you’ll find below the equator.” For more information, go to http://www.fodors.com/travel-photography/10-best-airports-for-layovers-214.html.
