The world's longest cargo plane has arrived at the Miami International Airport. The Cathay Pacific Cargo plane arrived at MIA before dawn Wednesday to a water cannon welcome. "This is a boost to the economy of Miami," said Deputy Director of Aviation Ken Pyatt. This world renown Boeing 747 is 225 feet wide and 250 feet long, the equivalent of almost one football field. This 8-freighter serves more than 40 destinations. "It can hold 125 tons," said Pyatt. "It's pretty too hard to quantify that but it's a lot of stuff." Crews have unloaded its inaugural shipment. They will reload more goods onto the plane and it will return to Anchorage, Alaska to refuel before heading to Hong Kong. "Perishable products, technology products, textile products-- just everything," said Pyatt. Cathay Pacific has launched a new international trading route connecting Asia to South America via the United States. This flight will touch down at MIA five to six times a week, which is an expansion from its original three times a week route. Cathay Pacific Cargo hopes to add a passenger route to its fleet in the near future. |

On December 15, Miami-Dade County and GMCVB officials gathered at MIA’s annual Reward and Recognition ceremony to honor Employee of the Year Adelaida Mora, a janitorial custodian at MIA, for “cleaning” the airport of a crook trying to steal money from two passengers. While purchasing her bus pass at the airport’s bus station in September, Adelaida overheard a man talking to two young female travelers who were looking for the bus to Key Largo. When she heard the man giving them wrong directions and telling them he could sell them tickets, Adelaida became suspicious and quickly went to intervene. As the man was reaching to take money from the passengers and lead them to the wrong bus, Adelaida confronted him, grabbed the passengers and led them away from the bus. While comforting the passengers, she immediately contacted airport security and the man was detained by Miami-Dade Police soon after.
For her heroic efforts, Adelaida was named MIA Employee of the Year and received two round-trip tickets from American Airlines to anywhere in the continental U.S., Caribbean, Canada, Bahamas, Bermuda or Mexico. Employees from AirIT, American Airlines and the Transportation Security Administration were also recognized with Spirit of MIA awards for extraordinary acts of compassion and customer service.

New walkway to facilitate passengers at MIA Travelers who are already dreaming of snowmen and sleigh rides should remember that they must get through the airport before getting to their vacations. Travel can often turn into the Grinch of the holiday season. "You can see security lines that snake on for an hour easily," said travel agent Jacob Marzouca. But this year, Miami International Airport has an early present for travelers. A temporary outdoor walkway that connected the North Terminal to the rest of the airport has been replaced by a much bigger and better indoor walkway. In about three weeks, the direct connection to the rental car area will also open. Travelers can expect more convenience.

Security Wait Times at the 25 Busiest U.S. Airports
Additionally, keep in mind that these numbers are averages. That means that, within an airport, if one security checkpoint has a wait time of 10 minutes and another has a wait time of zero minutes, it averages out to 5 minutes, even though one checkpoint is much slower than the other.

Dominant American Airlines' Bankruptcy No Miami Game-changer |
|

Miami-Dade County Aviation Director Jose Abreu, who manages the airport, said, despite confidence that American will emerge from Chapter 11, that airport administrators must monitor the situation because of the carrier's importance to the airport and Greater Miami as a whole. "Miami is profitable" for American, Mr. Abreu told Miami Today. "Whatever they do, it likely will not affect Miami." Mr. Abreu said Miami is American's top hub for international flights, which tend to be more lucrative than domestic flights. In addition, he added, history shows that major carriers typically have reorganized and come out of Chapter 11, which allows debtors to continue operating while following a court-supervised debt repayment plan. "For those that have restructured in the past, their hub airports really have not suffered," Mr. Abreu said.

MIA was the U.S. airport with the most growth through the first eight months of 2011, and the upward trend is expected to continue this Thanksgiving travel week despite projections for a decrease nationally. More than 839,000 passengers, or an average of nearly 105,000 passengers per day, are expected at MIA during the eight-day Thanksgiving travel period that begins on Monday. Total Thanksgiving week travelers at MIA are projected to increase 2.5 percent from last year, in contrast to the Air Transport Association of America’s (ATA) forecast for a two-percent decrease nationwide. MIA’s favorable projections are based on domestic seat capacity at the airport increasing six percent to date this year despite capacity cuts and decreased demand across the nation, coupled with international traffic growth and historically strong Thanksgiving holiday cruise traffic. Through August, passenger growth at MIA surged by seven percent – more growth than at any other U.S. airport. MIA continued to soar in September with nearly 2.8 million passengers for a 9.6-percent increase over 2010, keeping the airport on track to easily surpass its best year ever last year. |

Live graffiti painting. A colossal rose bed soaring 20 feet high. Early photos of Andy Warhol, a Picasso up for auction and a naked woman living in a pig pen. They're all part of the lineup for Art Basel Miami Beach, which runs Dec. 1-4, with a host of related events beginning Nov. 30.
The art experience will begin for many at Miami International Airport with Harmonic Convergence, a 72-foot-long window wall with diamond-shaped panes of glass in 150 transparent colors. The installation by architect and composer Christopher Janney creates a gradually changing pattern of colors, similar to a rainbow. It was installed a few months ago in an airport entrance by a people-mover walkway. Travelers will hear sounds Janney recorded during trips to the Florida Everglades, scuba dives in the ocean, and other natural environments. At the top of each hour, a short composition with percussion instruments plays, marking the time of day. |

TSA PreCheck Pilot Starts Today at Select Airports to Further Enhance Security |
|
In the News:
|
Pilot Starts Today at Select Airports to Further Enhance Security The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) today announced that it began testing a limited, voluntary passenger pre-screening initiative with a small known traveler population at four U.S. airports. The TSA PreCheck initiative implements a key component of the agency’s intelligence-driven, risk-based approach to security. This pilot program will help assess measures designed to enhance security by placing more focus on pre-screening individuals who volunteer information about themselves prior to flying in order to potentially expedite the travel experience. During this pilot, TSA will use pre-screening capabilities to make intelligence-based risk assessments on passengers who voluntarily participate in the TSA PreCheck program and are flying domestically from one of the four pilot sites: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County, Dallas/Fort Worth International and Miami International airports. Eligible participants include certain frequent flyers from American Airlines and Delta Air Lines as well as members of the Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP’s) Trusted Traveler programs, including Global Entry, SENTRI, and NEXUS, who are U.S. citizens and are flying on participating airlines. If successful, TSA plans to expand the pilot to include additional airlines, as well as other airports that participate in CBP’s Global Entry program, once operationally ready.

| All Parking Spaces Are Capped at $17 per Day Effective October 1
New rates going into effect at Miami International Airport at 12:01 a.m. on October 1 will simplify the cost of parking at MIA to $17 per day, or $2 for every 20 minute increment up to two hours and 40 minutes. The new rate slashes the previous charge of $30 for spaces in the short-term lot immediately outside the airport’s Central Terminal while increasing by $2 the maximum daily rate in the Dolphin and Flamingo garages near North and South Terminal. This is the first rate increase at MIA in approximately five years. “MIA has recently made a number of improvements to expedite the flow of traffic and improve customer service, including the implementation of SunPass Plus and valet parking for both North and South Terminal. With the opening of new terminal facilities for international arrival passengers, all 8,059 of our parking spaces are now considered premium parking spaces depending on your airline,” said Miguel Southwell, Miami-Dade Aviation Department Deputy Director for Business Retention and Development. “The rates have therefore been simplified to reflect this change.” MIA continues to offer valet parking in the Dolphin and Flamingo garages for $18 within three hours or $30 per day for three hours or more. Economy Park and Ride parking is also available for $3 each hour for the first two hours or a daily rate of $8.
