Miami Airport Tri-Rail Station to Close Temporarily

Tri-Rail's Miami Airport Station will temporarily close on or about September 12, 2011 to facilitate construction of the Miami Intermodal Center (MIC). The station is expected to be closed for a period of approximately two years, during which time it will be rebuilt and connected to the airport via an escalator and people mover.

During this two year period, the southern terminus of rail service will be the Hialeah Market Station, where bus transportation will be provided to and from the Miami International Airport through this station. Trailers have been installed to house a ticket agent and restroom facilities. Additional lighting has been installed and approximately 60 additional parking spaces have been striped. There will be 24-hour security at the station.

Two northbound trains, P638 and P642, will originate from the Metrorail Transfer Station. Two southbound trains, P631 and P635 will terminate at the Metrorail Transfer Station. Passengers will be bused to and from the Hialeah Market Station and the Miami International Airport for these trains.

A test of the new traffic pattern is scheduled for Thursday, September 1.

By closing the Miami Airport Station, the construction time of the MIC will be reduced by approximately 21 months and will result in taxpayers saving approximately $10 million in construction costs. The impact to passengers should be less than 10 minutes in extended travel time to the airport.

Attention Miami Airport Station Passengers: Miami Intermodal Center Work Continues

Construction activities continue at Tri-Rail's Miami Airport Station, related to work on the Miami Intermodal Center.

The station parking lot will be closed indefinitely, until the necessary work is completed; however, parking spaces for persons with disabilities remain located at the station, near the ticket vending machines.

The Florida Department of Transportation has built a temporary overflow parking lot for all other Tri-Rail passengers on the northwest corner of the intersection of Northwest 37th Avenue (Douglas Road) and Northwest 21st Street.

Passengers are also advised to plan for additional travel time to and from the station. The Florida Department of Transportation will provide information on detours and alternative routing via electronic message boards. Real-time traveler information will also be available at  www.micdot.com,  www.smartroute.com or by dialing 511 and entering MIC route #642.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience.

Plan a trip using public transportation:
To get step-by-step transit directions, find transit stops in your area or view station information & schedules, go to google.com/transit, enter your starting and ending addresses, including the city name, and get three complete mapped itineraries of your trip. Although taxis and other private transportation serve Miami International Airport, many travelers to the Greater Miami area opt to use public transportation to reach local destinations. Always verify hours of operation for each bus route serving the airport (see links below).

At the airport, visit our computerized transit information kiosk anytime in the bus-waiting room at ground level. Before boarding public transit, check the frequently-asked-questions section for local travel details, accessible services, and find out how to reach major tourist attractions. To speak with a transit information agent, call 305-891-3131, weekdays, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.; weekends, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Printed Metrobus route maps and schedules can be picked up at the airport's information center in Central Terminal E, level 2. Besides the kiosk, a wall-mounted system map and Tri-Rail schedules are also available in the ground-level waiting room. Tri-Rail, the tri-county commuter train, serves Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. Welcome, and enjoy your stay in Miami.

The MIC is a major centralized transportation hub being developed by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) that will provide seamless access to all modes of transportation, including Metrobus, Metrorail, Tri-Rail, Amtrak, Greyhound, tour buses, taxi cabs and rental cars. An automated people mover will connect the MIC to the airport.
