Drawing Parrallels: Basquiat & Lam, Bold Truth

Miami International Airport’s MIA Galleries in collaboration with Miami-Dade County Public Schools Division of Life Skills & Special Projects.
Artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Wifredo Lam were the mavericks of their day, challenging the current norms and ideas. Both artists used similar elements of art and design and, at times, incorporated texts in their works to tell a story. Basquiat's use of line, color, and shape, often called "primitive," described truths about society's hate and discrimination. In comparison, Lam used line and shape to define and tell his story of the people in Cuba. For this exhibition, students reflected on the current social and cultural norms to develop their personal stories while incorporating text into their compositions.
